Storage of EBM (expressed breast-milk)

The following information regarding the storage of ebm is translated from the notes prepared by the Institut Kesihatan Umum, Jabatan Kesihatan Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur

Thawing ebm

  • Leave the frozen ebm in the lower compartment overnight
  • Immerse the ebm container in WARM water
  • Do not heat the ebm in the microwave or on stove top
  • EBM that has been thawed must be consumed within 24 hours

**It is important for mothers to take time to explain in detail about the proper handling of expressed breast milk to their babies' caregiver.

 

Other tips to remember are:

  • Wash hands before handling ebm
  • Containers and bottles must be clean or sterilise
  • Warm up only the desired quantity
  • Do not leave already warmed up and unfinished milk left in the bottle and continue feeding the baby. Discard what is not finished.
