| What
is normal and what is not? The below are two questions posed by members
of the forum and the answers, also from the members.
Question
1 - No bowel movement for several days
My
Nina now is nursing fully, but it's been 3 days since she's moved her
bowels. Is this something I should be worried about? I'm thinking of
taking her to see my paed if she doesn't do anything today. How long
can a baby go without doing it? -Yat
Response
from members
Bowel
- If Nina is not straining or looks uncomfortable, just sit and wait.
You will be 'rewarded' with a big one soon. Matthew also satu
macam - sometimes poo about 7-9 times per day, then suddenly
3 days pun tak lepas. All the moo-mies here will chorus - this
is normal! if you are exclusively breast-feeding her. -
Lilian
Not
to worry! It's normal for exclusively BFG babies do not pass the bowel
very often. This is due to our super duper milk is almost 100% absorbed
as nutrition by their body, thus not so much to be passed. At
one time Wafiq (when he was 3 mths) did not do 'bisnes' for almost 10
days. Just minutes away before we went to see a paed, he gave
us a surprise with long overdue bullet! - Fiz
There's
nothing to worry about. Joe Yue, now 3.5 months old, has been having
bowel movement (since he turned 3 months)every 4 - 5 days. At first,
I was worried like you too but after that I realised that it was normal.
His paed said that there's even a record of 11 days! As long as the
poo-poo is not hard and pellet-like and your baby is not crying, it's
perfectly fine. - Christine
Question
2 - Poo to many times/5 mth old baby
| My son who is coming to 5
months now still passing motion almost at each feed. One day is
about 5-6, sometimes 7 times. His weight gain is about 400-600gm
per month for the last two months. Sometimes the stool is watery
too. However, He is still active and happy as usual.
Should I continue to fully breastfeed him or supplement
with solid or formula?
|
| Definitely
not supplement with formula! Have you checked with your paediatrician
about this? He may want to know the colour of the stool, the consistency,
whether it is pasty (like flour mixed with water), totally watery
or is there some transparent, jellylike stool. These are all very
important indications for doctors.
A food allergy can cause loose stool. Eg, the
food you take may not agree with your baby's digestive system.
Is this a daily occurrence? Does your baby get tummy aches, bloated
tummy etc? Is there a history of allergy in both you and your
hubby's family?
Your decision whether to start solid depends on
your comfort level. Many of us start solid at 4 months (only rice
flakes mixed with ebm). But many prefers to wait till 6 months.
Starting solid may not solve the problem unless you know the reason.
Best to check with your child's paed, pick up the phone and ask.
Otherwise, answer the above questions and write in detail. I will
check this out with a paed for you.

| i sent him
to the baby sitter during day time and according to the baby sitter,
it's watery. At home when i changed him, noticed that there are
occasion it looks like pastry type, also sometimes jelly type. It's
a mixed types of poo. To be honest, i really have no idea how a
healthy poo should look like.
As for allergy, me and my hubby do not have any
food allergy history. But remember during confinement month, i
took DOME and he got rashes on his body. Once i stopped, it disappeared.
For the past two days (Mon & Tues), he only
poo two to three times a day. It's hard for me to trace what I
ate during the time the milk was expressed because i have about
30-40 bags of milk storage in my fridge.
There are times at night when i breastfeed him
directly, he seemed to get wind - the stomach is hard and he cried
for quite a while. Not sure why he get wind. i can't tell the
difference between "wind" and stomach ache in baby.
Any symptom ?
He just got his last jab last week. So my paed.
only ask me to go back next year march for the next jab. He followed
the chart and my baby still fall between the range. Do we monitor
the baby's weight gain every week ? or should i just monitor on
monthly basis ?
I really want to breastfeed my baby except for
the weight gain that makes me worried. In fact i started to enjoy
breastfeeding him. It's very convenient and easy. I breastfeed
him in almost anyplace!
|
| What I have
learnt from the breastfeeding course today is that it is normal
for breastfed baby to poo frequent and a bit watery. To check if
it's healthy poo, try observing the skin around baby's buttock.
If it's smooth and no redness or pink patches around the buttock,
then it's ok. As bad poo will have acid and cause irritation to
baby's delicate skin easily.
For wind, try mild yu yee oil. Just use a drop
and rub on your palm and just press softly on baby's stomach.
If you are still worried, I think it's worth a
trip to your paed again.

Jelly like stool = mucousy stool = stools needing
attention
Read above thread for a paed's explanation about stools texture
Hi all,
Some of you mentioned about jelly like stools. Please note that
usually this is a sign needing some attention. If your baby is
fully breastfed, watch out which food you ate trigger this kind
of stool. Though the baby is growing well, etc, do tell your paed
about this when you have a chance. And make an effort to find
out which food you should avoid. Find out more about allergy march
on MMB's website.

Hi Josephine
My hunch is right then. You
posted about your baby with actopic eczema. And this loose stool
and even mucousy stool. Please do not take this lightly - find
out what cause the problems. You have to identify this early instead
of keep subjecting your baby to more allergic reaction.
