Been meaning to share these recipe I made for Matthew. The food taster gave his approval. Here goes:
Macaroni cheese
A fistful of macaroni
A piece of sweet potato (about the size of a small egg) cut into tiny cubes
Boil till soft or if your baby don't tolerate lumps, boil till mushy. Water - depends on the consistency your baby like.
Add a piece of Cheddar cheese when about to turn off fire. Cheese will melt into creamy paste.
Makes a creamy, sweetish and lemak meal. About 2-3 portion.
Spinach and corn porridge
Rice - a fistful
A chunk of meat for flavour
A pip of garlic
A few drops of olive oil
Boil till turn into porridge.
Add a piece of frozen spinach (thanks to Lia's idea, no need to buy a bunch of vege and use 5 leaves and throw the rest away), two tablespoon of corn kernels. Cook for a while.
Remove the meat and garlic.
Blend to get a greenish goo filled with iron. Add a dab of Bovril/Marmite for taste.
Beras merah. I bought beras merah (Jasmine brand) meant for nasi dagang but lazy to try.
So, I found that beras merah make a nice looking porridge too. Good fibre 'cos the reddish husk remains after blending.
Fish and peas
Boil 4 tablespoon of oats till mushy (blend the oats till fine before cooking will save time)
Add a piece of fish. (Make sure the fish is fresh)
Two tablespoon of green peas.
Blend or mash, depending on the texture your baby likes. _________________ 5xmom

Manju, I tried cooking cod this way and it's quite tasty:
Simmer a little milk (EBM or Formula) with some pepper corn n 1 bay leaf. Add the cod fillet n poach till meat flakes easily. Remove fish bones, pepper corn n bay leaf. Can serve direct or blend with mash potatoes, carrots, porridge/rice etc. Can also add spinach leaves to cook after removing bones etc.
Cheers

Hi manju,
u can try pomfret (bawal putih) too. it's a favourite of my boys, they can finish one whole fish each
to cook it, i simply steam it and then season with little soya sauce. or if you prefer, just rub a pinch of salt before steaming. i suppose you can leave out the soya sauce/salt since your little one is only 7 months. _________________ Cheers,

Thanks all for sharing the recipes. Will give it a try.
Questions:
1) Where can I buy to corn kernels?
2) For veges - How you guys puree it? With a food processor or just simply chop it with a knife?
Sori if my questions sound silly, I'm a newbie in cooking though.

Hi Vivian
Hello to you and glad to find someone with an interest in being great chef to baby. I am Lilian, whom I hope you know is the 'tai kar cheh' aka KPC aka moderator along with Sze2.
1. Corn kernels - you can find the frozen ones from the frozen food section. You know, those packet peas, carrots and corn they use for fried rice? Buy the most expensive, impressive and from NZ or something. Reason - the corn is smaller, sweeter and less fibrous. Only about RM3-4 per packet.
2. Vege - the texture depends on your baby liking. Some baby can take textured food but some like my Matthew (going to be 10 mths on 28/12)cannot stand any texture. So, I have to use a hand blender and blend everything till they are smooth. The aim is to get junior to adapt to daily food we eat. Looks like I have a long way to go because he can't even take larger pieces of bread, biscuit, etc. He has 6 teeth but gagged on every kind of food except bits of paper, cardboard, plastics etc that he dig out from God knows where . _________________ 5xmom

Haha... Ya my Eugene too refuses any rusks but will put anything (paper, cardboard, book, etc...) into his mouth.
I will blend everything he eats now to a very fine texture, even though hubby says not necessary. As Eugene threw out everything twice because he couldnt swallow the food. Then, I start my blending business. One problem with blending is that we have to add certain amount of water in order to make the blender works. Am I right? Then it will turn out to be too watery. Oh my God, I hope I just dont sound too silly. _________________ Ryan and Vivi

Of course you don't sound silly at all. I am a 5th time mom but first time cooking for baby 'cos used to work and mom took care of the older ones.
When it is too runny, what I did is to add some milupa rice flakes or I just let Matthew drink like soup. And I discover that by drinking (spoon fed), he took more food than when it is all thicky and lumpy.
Another way to counter the problem is to dry blend the quaker oats till powdery and add some and cook (since it is instant, just mix with very hot food will do). It will thicken the food and at the same time, nutritious and add a nice fragrance.
Hmm.. Lilian is getting to detail with cooking for baby. _________________ 5xmom

Is the seaweed the type they cook soup with (chee chai)? I think a little is ok then but frankly, I hate the smell. Avoid the Jap type one 'cos it is loaded with lots of salt, right? _________________ 5xmom

My girl is not 9-12mths old but didn't want to start a new topic.
Anyway, my close-to-3-yr-old daughter likes to eat salted eggs, nearly every meal must be accompanied by half a salted egg. The ones I bought are not so salty actually, the taste is quite mild.
Is it safe to feed a toddler this? Is there any nutrition to it?
Appreciate your advice. _________________ Moommy to two little ladies (3yrs & 15mths). |

This is also not very appropriate here but also don't want to start a new thread. Can I actually give a 7.5 months old baby fish ? My paed says to wait till she's 8-9 months. My MIL says till 1 or else she may develop ASTHMA ???? But I'm quite sure this won't happen.
Also, what kind of rice do you girls buy to cook porridge for your babies ? Mine currently comes from Kuching. The less polished rice which is suppose to be more nutrituional then polished rice. It contains no preservatives and hence, spoil extremely fast (black bettles propogate like nobodies business). I want to buy similiar rice in Selangor rather than have them airflown over by relatives everytime we run out. I don't know where to get such rice here. _________________ adele |

Hi. Just saw this post today. Anyway, my paed/lc said that I can start giving baby solids at 6 months. 1st week cereal 2nd week cereal and porridge, 3rd week cereal and porridge 2x. She says that I can add veges and meat, fish, tofu into the porridge and only give fruits at 7 months. (No need to try one food at a time coz nost babies not allergiec to vege/fruits/meats) I have given fruits, vege and fish(at 6 3/4 months). DD is now 7 1/4 months. So far so good. Actually I have read many conflicting articles about what to give when. So I have decided - Avoid the highly allergic stuff like eggs, peanuts, etc. Otherwise, go with your instinct andf monitor for signs of allergy/intolerance. Go slowly to make sure coz every baby is different. _________________ Doreen - Mother of 3 1/2 year old drama queen and 8 month old chot chot princess with real chubby cheeks. |

Adele, if you affraid the bugs in the rice, put some dry chilies in the rice, three KG rice put about 5 pcs dry chilies will do the trick, MIL said garlic clove also can, but I finish the garlic very fast, always dig out and use it , so hehe . oh, the dry chilies wouldn't make the rice taste spicy, don't worried.
the unpolished rice is better to grain first before you cook, because your baby not reach 1 yet, afraid it can't be digest easily, not grain until powder lah, just "sui sui" ok already.
the rice I use for porridge is Japanese short grain rice, and mixed half with brown rice (grain it before the girls reach 1, after that just use as it is). if they have rice on that day, I'll use siamese rice mixed 1/3 of brown rice. so far so good. _________________ Maria Ho汤宁霄,

hello,
thought i should also share some of my little boy's experiences with his food.
i introduced semi-solids to yee rei when he turned 6mths. i started cautiously with brown rice cereals for about 2 weeks before giving him other variety like cereals with bananas and apple, coupled with those bottled baby food starting first with only the veg.
when he turned 7 months, i introduced porridge with carrots and spinach thrown in. as for fish and meat, i introduced them to him only 2 weeks later when he turned 7 1/2mths. i cooked them together his porridge.
fruits wise, he has already gone from pear, apples, banana and now avocado (just gave this to him yesterday). i don't give him fruits from the baby food range coz i figured fruits is best eaten fresh.
i admit that i am alittle slow in introducing him new variety of food coz i would rather he 'stablises' first on one food variety before i introduce him to new types although some literature said that new food can be introduced to him every 5 to 7 days.
hope this helps. _________________ Mum to Yee Rei (who joined our family on 23 Aug 03), a lovely and happy boy who is so curious about the world around him. |

Hi,
Thanks to Maria for her advise. I've started putting in both dried red chillies and crushed garlic plus sun the rice. Have finally gotten rid of all those bettles and now, I have a new consignment of airflown rice that I have to deal with before it spoils.
Aiyah, was still hoping that I could find those unpolished rice here. Maybe should buy Bario rice from Giant for her when I run out of my airflown rice.

hi,
like to check if its ok to give my 9mth old son bread, say dipped in milk? is whole meal bread better than white bread?
also i read from the earlier email threads tht cheese can be given to the baby? any specific type of cheese? could those soft cheese spread be used? in addition, i know that there are low salt cheese, but does any one know of cheese with no salt added? just want to play safe coz my boy doesn't take alot of water.

Jenny, wholemeal bread always better then white bread, and since you mention your boy not drinking a lot water, white bread very easy to cause constipation, so as plain white rice.
about the cheese, I can't find the low salt cheese in the supermarket, but I didn't try those gourmet outlet.
I start giving the girls cheese since they reach 8 months old, 1/4 pc. of those normal chedder(spelling?) cheese, twice a week, then after one month, 1/2 pc. about three time a week, then slowly increase, now they reach 18 months, I give them the cheese stick twice a week, depend on their diet and milk intake, less solid they take, a little bit more cheese I give, give together with grape or other fruits, they love it.
about the salt, since their rice or porridge not much salt or no salt, so I'm not so worry about the salt contain in the cheese. I once gave a pc. a day, but after one week or two, being adviced not to by my sister, so I slow down lor... _________________ Maria Ho汤宁霄,

as for food for my 9 month old nicholas. he loves spinash + milk + rice powder. second favourite is a 6 in 1 porridge (fish, anchovy, P*rk, carrot, patatoes, broccoli). i normally cook them in slow cooker & later grind it with blender till it's paste like.
haven't offerred any cheese things to him but i know in western countries, cheese is like 2nd nature thing to give to their baby once they started solid. u can hardly buy any bottled food for baby without cheese in it.
just curious, i've added some small onion & garlic into nicholas's porridge 2 days ago for the 1st time & he has some eczema near his anus. wonder if it's the allergy or just coincidence with something else. anybody that has allergy with these 2 ingredients b4?

Hi Angie
Mei Shi is allergic to spices.
Sometimes, when a baby is teething, I notice their stools and urine has some changes and he tend to get red bottom. Could that be the cause?
Hi Jenny
If your baby is not over ONE year, try to stay away from wholemeal bread and cheese. Wholemeal means wheat which is harder to digest. Cheese is from full cow's milk and also hard to breakdown in the baby's tummy. A few nibble here and there is ok but try not to make it their regular meals. _________________ 5xmom

Andie, this happen to Annabelle too, Isabelle got it too sometime but not so bad, it was around the anus and sometime the pubic area. I also thought this was cause by the food, but the paed. dismissed it when I bought it out during the last visit, at that time Annabelle having diarrhea, so got rashes around the bottom, so I told the paed. sometime if the food is not right, the rashes will happen too, but he said rashes around the anus and pubic area doesn't associate with food allergy! but according the book I read it said the urine or poo-poo contain the becteria cuase the rashes! what cause the bacteria? the food.
I don't know why the paed. dismissed it, because as long those food is not right, the rashes appear, before the girls reach 1, egg yolk, shrimp, shell fish, garlic and onion(yes, Angie), eventho a little bit of oyster sauce, long beans...
Lilian, can ask dr. about this as well, does the nappy rashes associate with food allergy? _________________ Maria Ho汤宁霄,

Hi moomies, been busy lately. Anyway, here's a recipe I would like to share with you. I made it for my 10mth old bb last Sat, freeze it in portions. She loved it. Making it again tomorrow.
LENTILS & VEGE SOUP
1 cup lentils (I used brown lentils but any lentils will do)
1 medium sized potato (diced)
1 small carrot (diced)
1/4 bombay onion (sliced)
1/2 stalk of celery (diced)
1-2 tsp butter or olive oil
1 bay leaf
1. Boil all the above in a pot with approx 2 small bowls of water. Let it simmer till the veges and lentils are all very soft.
2. Add the butter or olive oil.
3. There shouldn't be so much liquid left.
4. Discard the bayleaf and blend all to your bb's preferred consistency.
Its very delicious! My bb loves it, so do try it! _________________ Moommy to two little ladies (3yrs & 15mths).

Here's another one for the bb:
Chicken and Vegetable Soup
1 kampung chicken
1 chicken liver
2 potatoes
2 carrots
1 onion
2 bay leaves
1. Put all the above in a slow cooker and cook for about 4-5 hrs.
2. Discard bayleaves. Blend all the above with some of the soup.
3. The remaining soup, you can keep in the fridge for other use (I gave it to my 3yr-old during mealtimes). Very tasty!
Oh ya, if you want to add some greens like spinach or peas, you may. Just steam or boil the greens separately for 1-2 mins and blend it together with the above.
Looking forward to any other recipes you moomies may have for 9-12mth old bb? _________________ Moommy to two little ladies (3yrs & 15mths). |

Hi Moomies,
My paed and some other sources recommended to wait until baby is about 8 or 9 months before introducing meat. This is 'coz the baby's digestive system is not quite ready to process meat before they're 8 months old.
As for cheese, cottage cheese is best 'coz it's the lowest in salt compared to cheddar and other types of cheese. However, some cheddar cheese can be grated onto food, eg, potato to give it some taste and calcium oomph. Yoghurt can also be given to a baby aged between 9 - 12 months. Babies above 1 year old can be given whole fat milk for drinking.
Adam's food is pretty boring. Rice porridge with finely-chopped meat and veg. His porridge is cooked with the soup that is prepared for our dinner, before salt is added on the soup. Sometimes, he has alphabest pasta (tiny ones) with meat and veg. I've also tried giving him french toast - pieces of homemade (bread machine) bread cut in strips, dipped in egg and fried lightly with olive oil. I can't get him to eat fruit and drink water lah. So have to give him watery rice porridge.
Maria, diaorrhea and rashes in the nappy area, etc. Could it be thrush? I've also found that when Laura (even at almost 4 years old) has a lot of meals outside, which usually contains a lot of salt, she complains of pain when she wee. Her privates and around her anus turn red. Too much salt in the girls' diet? Processed cheddar slices have very high salt content.
Adele, you can get unpolished rice from markets or supermarkets. In the supermarket, unpolished rice are sold in 1kg packs and costs more than regular polished rice. This is something I don't understand as the unpolished rice is less processed right? I don't know which part of Selangor you're in. If you're in the PJ area, you can go to the Kampung Cempaka market or the Sect 17 market. There is a shop in the area which sells everything to do with rice and you can get any kind of rice you want. The rice is sold by the kilo, so you can buy whatever amount you need. I believe there will be such a place in the Old Town market as well. Maklumlah, I grew up in PJ. Now that I'm in KL, I don't know where to go. KLites, can tell me where got shop that sells rice ah?

Wah, Jolin - nice recipe.
Can you help with something, ah? Not urgent and can do anytime. Can you help to archive these recipes and turn them into word documents? I think there are several good suggestions in this thread, for babies of different ages. When you have the Word Document, please mail me so I can make them into webpages. Give credit to the person who provided the tips/recipes. And if the recipes are taken from some cookbook, please ignore 'cos dunwan to steal others idea. _________________ 5xmom

Hi Angie - Yes I am allergic to ginger (after all these years)
Maria - I could explain the diarhoea and the red bottom. Loose stools are slightly alkali and thus frequent contact with the anal skin causes excoriation and thus the red bottom.
I don't think food allergy directly causes "red" bottom. Its more that diarhoea or change in stool due to food reaction.
Jolin - interesting recipes. What is bay leaf called in hokkien or commonly known? I notice you don't add rice to it.
Your daughter is about the same age as mine. I notice that you still blend her food. This question has been nagging me.
When is the right time to inroduce textured food and how?
I don't mean the finger foods but the rice and veges and meat.
Anyone?
I recently introduce oats for her as her breakfast meal.
Its just a small amount with added milk and she loves it.
I haven't some across anyone against it or for it.
Anyone?
For her regular meals, there is no special recipe except the campur-gaul thingy like angie. We will cook her porridge till real soft and mashed her cooked veges with spoon to produce a more textured paste rather than blend it. However, we still blend the meat till her gigi geraham comes out. _________________ Mei Shi - moo2 to Min lynn (4yrs) n bb Yu Hern (June 07)

Oats!
Matthew has that on most mornings. Usually, it is mixed with beras merah flakes (can find in organic shop) for a smoother texture. Plus milk and a dab of honey. (oops, sorry : Correction - honey is not to be given to baby less than one year and in fact, is not good at all but I have to give to Matthew who is 15 months old now. So, NO HONEY for this thread, ok?)
Mei Shi - if a baby doesn't throw up with lumpy foods, by all means no need to blend lar. For meats, I chopped them real fine and when cooked in slow cooker, they will become very easy to swallow. Just take a big tablespoon and lenyek.
Bay leaf can be found in dried form in supermarkets under spice section (those mat sallehs range?) Using sparingly (even a 1/4 leaf 'cos the smell is rather strong). Jolin - sorry ah, I kpc before you can answer. _________________ 5xmom

I think it could be the salt in the cheese, Annabelle got red bottom in the evening, she cried and point to her nappy, poo-poo already, open up and see, wah! patches of rashes, poor thing. Remember last time paed. said if the rashes happen shift to lactose free milk, this is the time I miss BF the most , too bad, the last bottle of EBM finished three months ago .
annabelle skin sligthly sensetive then isabelle, eventho a moz. bite, the bite will turns to a big lump, the first time saw it very scary, now slowly take it easy. _________________ Maria Ho汤宁霄,

Hi Mei Shi,
Sorry for replying so late, and thanks to Lilian for replying on the 'bay leaf question' The malay term is daun salam They sell it fresh too but not easily available so just get the dried one.
Mei Shi, I don't add rice b'cos both recipes have potatoes in it. So it replaces the rice lah. I admit I am more 'ang moh' when it comes to food choices.
But once a week, my bb will have chicken porridge (rice boiled with half a chicken for 2 hours on low fire, add fried onion and the oil which the onion are fried in, add a bit of bovril (optional) and mashed carrots and bayam).
And another porridge that she has once a week is fish porridge, I used senangin. Add a small piece of ginger, with the rice and the whole fish. Once fish is cooked, take it out and remove all the bones. Discard the ginger too. Let the flaked fish and the porridge simmer a little while more. Add fried onions and oil, and mashed carrots and bayam. This porridge has a 'sweet' flavour from the fish.
Oh ya, I have one more recipe to share, which I cooked two days ago. My bb lapped it all up!
Beef & Vege Soup
1kg beef (I bought Australian beef for soup from Jusco Supermarket for only RM2.50)
1 chicken liver
2 carrots, halved
2 potatoes, halved
1 stalk celery, halved
1 small ginger, crushed slightly
1 bombay onion
2 bay leaves
Water approx 1.5L
1. Boil all the above in slow cooker for 5 hours.
2. Discard ginger and bay leaves. Blend the rest with the soup to make a smooth consistency. Don't blend all the beef or else it will be too 'heavy' for the bb. Just use a quarter or less of the beef.
3. The rest of the soup can be enjoyed by the family or your elder kids.
Oh yes Mei Shi, unless its meat, I blend but I don't blend till its totally smooth like puree, there are lumps in it. And my bb seems ok with the coarse texture. I don't blend porridge. _________________ Moommy to two little ladies (3yrs & 15mths).

Hi moomies,
I know that its good to feed our bb yogurt. I thought they should be fed full-fat yogurt. I saw the yoghurt for babies in supermart fridge section, but it costs around RM15 for 4 small packs!!!
I feed my bb Anlene plain yogurt which is also a low-fat yogurt. One costs about RM1.40. I scoop out half of it into a bowl and feed her every evening. 2 days per cup of yogurt. Should be ok right? Moos..?? _________________ Moommy to two little ladies (3yrs & 15mths). |

Jolin, your recipe seems so delicious, I just bought the bayleave yesterday, have to try, I guess the girls must be very bore to my cook, so as the daddy, but they all not dare to make any noise, afraid will have to take out again . BTW what is bombay onion? what is different from others onion? (whao! this qeustion so "ah-saw amateur")
yeah, so difficult to find yogurt not fat-free, and cottage cheese (for the girls to eat by themself), does the cottage cheese come in cube or stick form?
oh, another thing, can 18 months take Vitagen? I gave them few sips, they love it so much, but I dare not to give some more, because I'm not very sure about this. _________________ Maria Ho汤宁霄,

Maria, sorry, bawang bombay is an Indonesian word for the big yellow onions! hehehe... I don't think there is such a term as Bombay onion!
Maria, I personally prefer Yakult cos' it is more milky and less sweet and contains probiotics. But when Vitagen is on promo, I will also buy them cos' its cheap. My 3 year old has been drinking it everyday since she turned 2. Should be oklah, but its very sweet, no? _________________ Moommy to two little ladies (3yrs & 15mths). |

This is my maid's recipe for baby.
Chicken Macaroni Soup
1 small shallot
1 pip garlic
Chicken rib/ neck or 1 chicken wing
1/2 carrot cubed
1/2 potato cubed
Ground nutmeg (1/4 tsp) - Nicer with this but Optional
Macaroni/ Alphabet pasta
Water (approx. 2 cups)
1. Chop the shallot and garlic finely.
2. Fry with 1 tbsp of oil in slow fire till you can smell its fragrance.
3. Pour in the water.
4. Put in the chicken rib/ neck or chicken wing and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes.
5. Put in the carrots and potatoes, let it simmer for 15 minutes or till soft.
6. Put in the ground nutmeg, and macaroni, and 1/4 tsp salt (opt), simmer till macaroni is soft.
You can blend if you wish. Shelly take this without the need for it to be blended. Just mash up the soft potatoes and carrots with a fork. _________________ Moommy to two little ladies (3yrs & 15mths). |

Funny how I cannot cook adult food but so good with baby food.
KIDDIES CHICKEN RICE
1 cup rice
2-3 cups chicken stock (Just simmer some chicken ribs for 30mins)
1 pandan leaf (tie in knot)
2cm ginger (slightly bruised)
2 pips garlic (slightly bruised)
Dash of soya sauce
1. Wash the rice. Put in a pan with the chicken stock, pandan leave, ginger, garlic and soya sauce.
2. Boil till rice is soft and fluffy.
3. To feed older children, you can put in some chicken meat as well. _________________ Moommy to two little ladies (3yrs & 15mths). |

Hi would also like to share a recipes that my sunshine likes too.
Fish porridge
A fistfull of Brown rice (I use Somaly)
A small root of Sweet potato
Fish (I use kurau)
Vegetable/Chicken stock
Method:
Cook rice and sweet potato in stock in a slow cooker till soft and mushy. Add fish and cook another 10-15min. Mash/blend as desired.
Beef porridge
A small fistfull of Brown rice
A fistfull of Polenta (I use the organic type) [Use more polenta than rice]
Finely sliced beef
Vege - you can use corn/cabbage/cauliflower/broccolli (finely chopped)
Method:
In a slow cooker, cook the beef for a few hours till soft (I like to scald it in hot water first to remove the traces of blood that may make the soup too murky)
Add rice, polenta, vege and cook till soft.
Mash/Blend as desired.
You would need to experiment to see how much water you want to use. As Lizzie can easily handle thicker food, I use minimal water and her porridge is quite thick and dry. _________________ Doreen - Mother of 3 1/2 year old drama queen and 8 month old chot chot princess with real chubby cheeks. |

Hi to all mommies
I dont want to post a new topic here, and I hope my question is not a repeat. If so, my apologies. I've not been able anything going thru the forum.
I'd like to know when can I introduce red dates to my boy who is now 8 mths old. I'd like to add in to porridge if this is ok.
Thanks _________________ Jan |

My stomach already makes keroncong sound while i read thru all the recipes...my baby is already 2 mths on solid and yesterday i made her mashed potato which she totally loved, she finished one whole bowl. So glad that I found this forum, I didnt have much time to cook for my first one and I intend not to do the same for my second one.
Anyway thx jolin for all the recipes...me too never had much success with cooking adult food which is my DH's territory.
Lillian, I did have some photos on my version of ice cube carrot/pumpkin..will upload it later

Spinach Question
Today I asked my MIL to introduce spinach to Ian's porridge. She called me at lunch time, telling me that the porridge turned out to be sticky, like glue. Not the matter of too dry or not, it still has a lot of water, but it is just like glue, like got a lot of lendir like that.
How do you cook spinach? Does your spinach porridge also turn out to be like this? MIL chopped the spinach and put into porridge to cook together until soft. Is there anything wrong with this way? We had no problem cooking porridge this way with carrot/potato/yun-choy/pumpkin/etc. _________________ Fei Ru
