Hi Moomies,

I tried to search for this topic but could not find so please forgive if you have already talked about this hidden somewhere in the other recipe topics ok?

I have no time to cook so the slow cooker is a blessing. However, I only know how to make soups using the slow cooker. Anyone here has any good recipes to make stews or other complete meals using the crockpot? Please share.

Thanks.
Jolene

How about potatoes, carrots, celery, onion, tomato (or whatever vege is in your fridge) thrown in with chicken or other meats? Put in a clove of garlic, a tablespoon of taucheo and small piece of ginger. Like ayam pongteh like that. Colour it with some dark soya sauce or without also ok.

I am going to make Braised Lamb today. Saw the recipe from Amy Beh's column but too lazy to follow exactly. What I am doing is to throw the lamb pieces in with some dongguai, cinnamon stick, star anise and boil till soft. Supposed to add carrots and foo chok but no such ingredients so I substitute with tomatoes and button mushroom. Later tonight, I will tumis garlic and dried chillies plus nam yee (red fermented beancurd) and add the softend lamb.

Two nights ago, my #2 son wanted some home made soup. At night I put half a white cabbage (the long one?), one kampung chicken (whole chick, no need to chop), 2 oysters, 3 black mushroom, 2 scallops and kei chi. Next morning, all of them are drinking soup by the bowfuls. And the chicken taste yummy cicah with soya sauce.

Jolene, you can try www.momsmenu.com and www.allrecipes.com for crock pot, aka slow cooker, recipes. Granted these are American recipes and may seem a bit weird (did you know you can make a cake in your slow cooker?? Shocked ), but it makes interesting reading... Very Happy and some of the recipes seem pretty tempting. Definitely more interesting than ABC and lotus root soups.. Laughing Laughing

If you do happen to try those recipes, let me know how it goes. My slow cooker is still sitting pretty in its brand new shiny box after 1 month of use during my confinement 6 months ago.. Laughing Laughing

P/S: your blogs make interesting reading too! Very Happy I can definitely relate to some of your predicaments!! Very Happy

Thanks Lillian Embarassed

I didn't know there was a topic for this.

I have decided to start learning to use the croakpot and cook my meals for the day cos I couldn't find a caterer to send dinner to my house ( at Panchor, P. Chepa, Kelantan) and I really can't eat the canteen food every single day.

Its a blessing that you are all here to share your cooking secrets.
Thanks and keep them coming. Wink

I havent' invested in a slow cooker yet so it would help if some of you can suggest which is worth buying. I think I will get the large size pot cos I need to cook for 2 meals at least. I have read some of the recipes and didn't realise that they have temp control. I thought the setting was just high, medium and low. What is the difference?

eg. Cover, and cook on Low at least 8 hours, to an internal temperature of 160 degrees F (70 degrees C). ?? Confused

Hi Mei Shi
Thinking of you far away and having to cook your own meals with your hectic schedule. Hugz.

Forget about all the temp control etc. I had been using some ciplak brand (pensonic or something) with no problem at all. Just Low, High, Auto setting.

I suppose you will be getting things like chicken, lamb and beef in Kelantan. Beef and lamb are very good meats for slow cooking.

Here's a quick one meant for beef or lamb/chicken also can.

500 gms meat
Celery stalks (something like 3-4 stalks) they do have that in Kelantan?
1 carrot
2 large onions
1 clove garlic (that's the whole bulb)
1 leek (that's the huge vege that looks like spring onion, Hokkien call suan na)
Cut all into huge chunks.

Put into slow cooker with only ONE bunga cengkih (star anise) and one cinnamon stick. Add black pepper if you like. Salt to taste.

Leave to boil. If quantity is too much, you can divide into invidual portions and freeze them. It will taste even better. You can eat with bread also.

Oh ya, water add till cover about 75% of the height (the vege will go lembik and therefore, do not put too much water or you will get soup instead of stew)

If you don't have the above mat salleh vege, you can use lobak putih and carrots only. Also taste good.

If you like, you can invest in a bottle of Lea & Perrins sauce for making slow cooking stew. It certainly makes thing taste more mat sallehish. Just add a few dashes.

Need any idea, just give a shout. Tell me what's in your market and I will tell you how to combine them. Very Happy

Cows and sheep don't have breasts. Laughing Only chicken.

Usually, I buy the cheaper cuts in Cold Storage which they label 'for soup or curry'. Or go to wet market and ask for 'masuk sup punya'. It will come with some fats and tendons (gu kin). Now, got Tesco, the lamb shoulder from Australia very cheap only.

Wah Lilian,

I like the recipe you gave to Mei Shi lah. Must try it out one day. Meantime, I tried out your soup last Sunday. I put in the one kampung chicken (no need to chop) like you said (can save time), red dates, longan, kei chi, black mushroom, couldn't find the dried scallops so I substituted with dried sotong, don't like oysters so I omitted and I added "yok chok". Can simply add like that one ah? Sometimes I just bantai but not sure whether certain herbs can mix or not ie the yin/yang or cooling/heaty properties can clash or not. Thanks for the idea. My family enjoyed the soup.

I can only cook simple meal, the main challenge for me is 'how to combine them', to produce a 'tastable' dish /soup! yeah, that's the word - combine! Embarassed

If I simply combine, I will get the dish / soup cooked but no ginea p*g to try it, all will go down the drain!

Thanks Lilian for the recipe, will try it out soon!

This is an interesting and helpful topic for busy moms like us eh? Very Happy I'm so scared of cooking now as don't know what to cook and so lazy to surf for recipe from those recipe sites. Our MMB's tested and sure 'boleh' recipes will be of great help. OK, will try Lilian's recipe.

Lilian, the cheap Australia lamb shoulder also can eh? Jusco is selling these lamb shoulders very cheap too. Sometimes I will just marinate a bit and grill, and serve with steamed corns and fries. Wink

Lilian and Moos,

My beef stew turned out superb. Cooked 3 portion, had 1 and freeze the other 2. Unfortunately, for the flood in Kelantan, I was affected. Yucky water came into my house (fortunately only 4 inches high) and needed to switch off the electricity (just in case!) So after 3 days of no electricity... got to throw everything out! Sad

I recently cooked chicken with 'Koh kua' and added tau cheong with other stuff. It turned out ok but ...
How can I thicken the gravy in slow cooker?

Can we cook curry chicken/ lamb / beef with slow cooker? Recipes pls.

Thanks.

hi, you may want to try this. one can coke, one can mushroom soup (campbell) some chicken bouillon or gravy to taste, half a chicken (chopped), some root vegetables and leave for 5 to 6 hours. my brothers like them. sometimes i use a can of beer instead of coke. i got this from my aunt's mother in law residing in british columbia, canada. she is a real good cook.

HI, Lilian and Natasya,
glad you like the casserole dish. although in Canada, they don't call in calstew. That's a good name for it, though. They just call it crockpot roast, because they usually use a leg of P*rk for it. I uses P*rk too,and usually leave out the vegetables but chicken is more consumer friendly in Malaysia. You can also use the leftover over hot dog buns or burger buns for your kid's lunch or for your work lunch. I used to puree the P*rk adding some milk and vege chunks and without the sauce (too high in sodium) when my first born was about 12 months old, and planning to do the same for Ashley with low sodium campbell soup and freeze them when Ashley starts solids in another month's time.
I would be glad to oblige if you need any specific recipes. just let me know. My aunt's MIL, Mrs. Hermary was kind enough to share with me most of her recipes.
