Why do we need term life insurance?

I just asked my hubby about life insurance and term life insurance. He was an insurance salesman before. He explained to me that term life insurance has lower premium and hence, some people just buy it for a certain terms like 60 years and so on. I asked him if that is the case, does the person means to die before the term?
He said it is not necessary this way. But he said at the end of the term life insurance sometimes people may get back a small sum of money and sometimes, none at all. It depends on the policy. So, I still do not understand why people need term life insurance and not a whole life insurance.
