The Holy Family

Today is the celebration of the Holy Family in my Catholic church. We are called to remember how important the family unit is. The priest reminded us that the family is the basic of everything, from a community to a country. In order for a country to flourish, it needs a loving, strong and close family units. This is so true. Without which, there will be social problems like drug addiction, teen pregnancies, gambling addiction and so many other social problems.

Being parents are such difficult task and one doesn’t know how tough it is until our children are much older. To me, those early days are now pale compared to the tasks I face as mother to teenage children. In a way, I thank God that they have turned out well. There are so many things that we have to teach our children and yet, those are lessons not found in books. Things like how to face disappointments, deal with relationship problems, surviving in a modern world without being badly influenced and etc. It is only through both parents example that our children are able to emulate the positive points.
And of course, at an even more basic structure, it is the spouse relationship that is even more important. That’s why St. Paul always reminded couples to submit to each other and asked the men to be loving to their wives. At times, the word submission do sound like very biased towards the women but if both parties can give and take and the man continues to play his role well, marriages will not face divorces. And with that strong foundation, families are built.
