Parents of teens – Let’s learn a new word “EMO”

Jul 9th, 2006 by Lilian

It is not Elmo of Sesame Street. It is Emo. E.M.O. I can’t help but notice the kind of message profiles (not the actual message but those few words to identify the user ID) left by the teens on their MSN. Ouch, scary stuffs.

Maybe you won’t have noticed this unless you’re a teenager, or the parent of one, but emo as a teen phenomenon is the Next Big Thing, bigger than Goth.

After being mom to a 16 years old whom had been stubborn, obstinate and very indepedent from age 6 yrs old, I am numbed to all their unpredictable characters. Nothing surprises me, nothing worries me anymore.
So, what exactly is emo? What does emo teens do? Read the article Emotionally Challenged and be prepared for some generatin gap shock. I prefer to view them as this:

Samantha, a no-nonsense Long Island-based 20-year-old college student who works part-time, lives at home, and thinks emo is for losers, says: “They are middle-class suburban kids with all the opportunities everyone else has, but they take the littlest thing and get all devastated over it in a very melodramatic way. Every little problem is like a gigantic deal and they are creating these devastating scenarios for themselves. I’m not sure if they actually hurt themselves but the girls wear fat rubber bracelets supposedly to cover up their cutting scars and the boys wear make-up and kiss each other on stage. Being gay or pretending to be gay is very emo.”

If you ask me, being 18 years and below, emo is cool. After 21 years, I would cut off financial support (except for basic necessities and education) if it gets on my nerve. After 25 years old, I would suggest a psychiatrist. And maybe give myself a good kick.
