Kids wearing Crocs getting caught in escalators

The other day, one of the member in my parenting forum told us how her little daughter lost one of her little toe at an escalator in Singapore. It was a great shock to us. Apparently, that’s not the only case as other children too had endured the same accident.
That’s why I am very paranoid about holding my four years old hand whenever he gets on the escalator eventhough the little man insisted he can do it on his own. I had to keep reminding him about losing a finger or toe. I know it is very unkind but you cannot reason with a little man who thinks he is a big man.
Many parents are still ignorant and allowed their kids to be monkeys on the escalators. It is damn scary for me especially on those escalators that are extremely long and high. Some were even build to run across empty spaces, meaning there is no wall but wide open spaces where parents carrying babies could possibly lose grip and drop the child, three floors below should it come to an abrupt stop. Hongkong have lots of such escalators in the MTR.
YOUNG children at shopping centres and train stations across the world are reportedly getting their feet stuck in escalators because they’re wearing Crocs.
The flexibility and grip of the clunky-soft soled clogs seem to be the problem, with reports from the US, Singapore and Japan telling of Crocs getting caught in the “teeth” at the bottom or top of escalators, or in the crack between the steps and side of escalators, Associated Press reported. The reports of serious injuries have all involved young children. Crocs are commonly worn by children as young as two.
Rory McDermott, 4, got his Croc-clad foot caught in an escalator last month at a mall in northern Virginia. His mother managed to yank him free, but the nail on his big toe was almost completely ripped off.
With news like above, I hope more parents will be extra careful and keep their child close to them always. It is very hard to get these boisterous children in our grip but let’s always remember to enforce it.
Very timely warning! My friend’s 3 year old kid had his Croc shoes caught at the bottom of an escalator, but fortunately the back strap was not worn, so he could just take his foot off. Imagine what could have happened if he couldn’t yank his foot off in time
That’s a bad news.. I think Crocs are incredibly lite, and comfortable to wear. But we need to be more careful wearing it.
I didn’t know how dangerous are those shoes on escalator until my 2 years old daughter had her crocs stuck in escalator in Malaysia. She lost her shoe inside one was really broken and she lost her toenail, deep skin injury and got 2 stitches on her toe. The doctor said she would not be able to move it but month later she is ok and can move her toe. But I want to make sure that one day kid’s Crocs would be forbidden.
