My children like Subway when they set foot on our little island. However, the prices are rather exhorbitant and it costs us a lot of money just to feed the kids. Now, they have gotten over the novelty.

What we do now is to assemble our own sandwiches. Since there are so many of us at home, we can buy the sandwich stuffings and have a fun time making the sandwich with our own preferred fillings :

This is the ham and cheese plus vegetables and balsamic vinegar.

Roasted German pork knuckle. I had purposely put the sandwich this way to show the mustard and mayo plus meat.

When we don’t have much to fill, we usually use tuna or eggs. Cheap and available all the time.

Kids love it when we cut the sandwiches into their desired shapes. Try it. Of course, the above two are not the healthiest but then, we don’t eat these sort of foods all the time.

My sister-in-law bought this dried seaweed back from her China trip. It is call purple sea laver or something. If your children loves seaweed, do try this soup because not only is seaweed nutritious, it tastes good as well. I.e. if the person likes the smell of the seaweed.

Basically, what I did was to boil a pot of soup consisting of some minced meat, tiny shrimps and garlic. When the stock is tasty, add in the dried seaweed which had been washed. Boil and knock an egg or two into it.

It is ready. You can eat it on its own or have it with rice.

My children all like those dried seaweeds in packets but they are impartial to the soft seaweed in the soup. Oh well, doesn’t matter, they drink the soup, I eat the seaweed.

You can buy dried seaweed from most supermarket. It is usually sold in flat pieces. Just put a small amount will do because it will swell when wet. This China seaweed is relatively cheaper than the Japanese one and doesn’t have that strong smell too.

Few days ago, I traumatized my poor little kid with the story of Hansel and Grethel. In case you do not know, it is about this pair of brother and sister who stumbled up a house made of candy and the greedy pair ate the house which belongs to the witch. In return, she wanted to fatten up Hansel and ate him. So, in the end, my poor little kid was so traumatized with the story of kid being eaten by witches.

Well, I save the situation by telling him about this site which sells bulk candy. Both of us immediately felt like we are Hansel and Grethel because there are so many types of candies and chocolates available there like Baby Ruths, Butter Fingers, Kit Kats, Almond Joys and candies sold by the pound like Red Hot Dollars, Skittles, Blow Pops, Mentos, and more.

We had a good time surfing and checking out the cheap prices of the candies because they are sold in bulk and therefore, much cheaper than the stores. Warning – Do not surf when you are hungry because you will end up buying everything!

My little boy and I love to run through Jamie Oliver’s cookbook. I have two of them and we enjoyed thumbing through the pages, looking at the dishes and cooking them. When I take my little one on grocery shopping trip, he will point out vegetables he had seen in Jamie Oliver’s book.

The other day, he asked me to buy yellow zucchini because Jamie Oliver has it. I made a baked dish covered with bacon. Fry some buttered and raisin rice. Serve it with soup. And we have our Jamie Oliver moment.

Kids love doughnuts. Usually, the ones sold by the shops are loaded with too much oil and too much sugar. Moreover, I doubt the quality of the oil the regular bakeries use. So, I am always very reluctant to let them indulge too much. Recently, my youngest has been bugging his dad to buy him doughnuts every evening.

So, I told him we might as well make a batch. I know if they eat too much, they will swear off doughnuts for a while.

The above is the doughnuts my kids helped me to make. It is really easy. My eldest’s muscle hands helped to do the kneading. The younger ones help to cut. All I did was to measure the ingredients and fry them.

I have the recipe on Best Recipes and photos of my children having fun making it on my 5xmom blog.

Now, my kids have so many doughnuts, they probably wouldn’t want to see donuts for several weeks.

If you have kids ranging between the age of 17 years old who prefer spicy foods, 15 years old who wants pasta and cheese, an 11 years old who hope eat nothing but junks and a four years old who must have rice, Chinese style, then, there will come days when you are lost on what to prepare.

When my fridge and larder ran out of good, healthy foods, then it is junk foods time. Today, I boiled some cheese cocktail sausages with chicken balls. Then, drain the water away. I boiled it to remove some of the salts and also ensure these get cooked thoroughly.

After that, I put some oil and pan fry them a bit, add a big dash of tomato ketchup, sugar and lots of mozarella cheese.

I give it to them with a warning, “Junk foods like these are bad for health.”

However, the sausages cooked this way have been sold at my kids’ school food fairs for years. Kids lurvveeee them.

Many people have commented how scrawny my children are and often bugged me with questions like if I am cooking for them or are they eating only junk foods. Usually, I am angry beyond words because they have the impressions that thin kids are sickly kids. My kids are all very healthy and they rarely need to see doctors.

I choose to ignore questions like these because if I open my mouth, I will give them a good lecture on proper nutrition and how important it is for us mothers to make sure that we are feeding our children well. For example, my kids love to have soups for every meal. Chinese soups advocate using herbal stuffs to balance out the meat. So, I like to use Goji Berries to flavour them because it gives sweetness to the soup.

Do you know that Goji Berry has so much goodness in them? They have now processed the fruits and sell them as health supplement. Do take a look at the links provided and find out how goji berries are good for your health. There are drinks and dried goji berries which you can purchase online.

It is entirely our responsibilities to make sure that our kids get the proper nutrition during their growing years so that they will adopt healthy eating when they are grown up. Less obesity problems and other health problems too.
